About the time in Shanghai
Shanghai sits at latitude 31.22, in the mid-latitude band, so day length here swings noticeably between midwinter and midsummer — today's 11h 38m is one point on that curve, not a fixed value.
Around 24,874,500 people live in Shanghai, and all of them keep the same civil time, so the reading above applies to the whole urban area — not just the city centre.
The zone identifier Asia/Shanghai is the value you want in code, calendars and travel systems. Abbreviations change with the season, but Asia/Shanghai keeps pointing at Shanghai time whatever the date, which is why every timestamp on this page is built from it.
